Pioneer of the TRADE Decision Support Model (DSM) awarded honorary doctorate by North-West University – 26 May 2017

Prof Ludo Cuyvers, an acclaimed international trade economist and leading authority on the role of export promotion in building a competitive and sustainable export sector, was awarded an honorary doctorate in international trade from the North-West University (NWU) on 26 May 2017. Prof Cuyvers’ association with the NWU, and the TRADE @ NWU research entity, started in early 2000 in a ground-breaking project to adapt an export market selection tool, the Decision Support Model ( TRADE-DSM™ ) to South Africa’s specific circumstances. The approach was pioneered by Prof Cuyvers and colleagues was first implemented in Cuyvers’ home country, Belgium, in the middle 1990s.

The TRADE-DSM™  is a practical and scientifically based tool used by national and provincial governments and private institutions (both in South Africa and other parts of the world) to pinpoint realistic export opportunities from the virtual mountains of information available on different product categories and markets. The department of Trade and Industry of South Africa (the dti) has commissioned TRADE @ NWU to assist the department with the design of a strategic framework and action plan for the export development and promotion of South Africa’s service sectors. Part of the project entails capacity building and training to relevant dti personnel. For this purpose TRADE @ NWU hosted a training workshop for a number of officials from the dti on the 4th and 5th of May 2017 at the Potchefstroom Campus.

The training was provided by Prof Sonja Grater, Dr Adelia Janse van Rensburg and Mr Martin Cameron (TRADE Advisory Pty Ltd). The training session focused on the role of trade in services in the export promotion environment. The first day of training entailed basic terms and concepts of trade in services, the role of service trade in global value chains, trade barriers to services trade, as well as the promotion of services with examples from selected countries. The second day was focused on practical training and how the TRADE-DSM™ approach and the TRADE-DSM™ Navigator tool can assist in export promotion efforts for both goods and services.

TRADE DSM Navigator™ – Expanding your export horizons

The challenge…
Rising competition and sluggish growth at home are forcing more and more businesses to consider exporting or, if already active at an international level, to diversify into new products and/or markets.

Most export strategies revolve around the issues of:
• Which regions/countries are worth pursuing and spending money on?
• How should the available product range be tailored so as to take advantage of the opportunities present in the market(s)?
• Which export opportunities should we focus our attention on, given the constraints of time, money, manpower and/or expertise?
